THE LATIN PROGRAMME POETRY PRIZE 2024

Thank you to everyone who entered The Latin Programme Poetry Prize 2024. On Thursday 21st March (National Poetry Day), we hosted our Poetry Sharing Event at The Broadway Bookshop in Hackney, a wonderful evening which brought together poets, readers, and friends of both The Latin Programme and The Broadway Bookshop. The shortlisted poems were brought to life by our wonderful readers Alison Skilbeck and Tim Hardy, and the winners of this year’s prize were announced by our excellent panel of judges (Clare Pollard, Antony Makrinos and Jonathan Goddard).

At the event, we also announced the creation of a new fund, in memory of Anita Carey (16th April 1948 - 19th July 2023).

Anita Carey was known as an actress through her roles in television series such as Coronation Street, the Spoils of War, Z-Cars and Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads. Her dedication to her craft, popular drama and the arts more widely was something that all who knew her can testify to. Anita lived for the arts and it is in this spirit that a fund has been created in her memory to ensure the continuation of this prize. We are proud to have Anita’s daughter Zanna as our Executive Director, and it was Zanna who has championed this prize since its inception, and who stands as a driving force behind our arts-first, inclusive approach to teaching Latin and Classics. We all hope that the proceeds from this prize, the attention that it raises and the poems it inspires will help us in our mission of “bringing the past to life to change the future.”

All proceeds from this year’s poetry anthology (copies available at The Broadway Bookshop), will go towards this fund, to support the continuation of the Poetry Prize.
